Tell us about your company.
I co-founded San Diego Divorce Mediation & Family Law with my wife, Mary Levin, a certified co-parenting specialist, because we share a deep commitment to helping families move through divorce with dignity and far less harm than traditional litigation often causes. We believe that when people are given the right support and structure, even very difficult transitions can be handled with respect and clarity. Over the years, we’ve seen how powerful this approach can be. We worked with a long-married couple in their 60s here in Poway who wanted to separate without destroying the life they had built together. Through mediation, they were able to resolve complex financial and retirement issues calmly, preserve their mutual respect, and move forward without years of stress or unnecessary legal costs. In another case, we helped a young family living on Candy Cane Lane in Poway who were deeply concerned about protecting their children from conflict. By avoiding court and working collaboratively, they reached a parenting plan that put their kids first and saved enough in legal fees that both parents were able to purchase new homes and create stable, positive environments for their children. We’ve also worked with parents who initially believed their situation was “too emotional” or “too complicated” for mediation, only to discover that having a neutral space and clear guidance allowed them to communicate again, resolve long-standing disagreements, and set up co-parenting arrangements that truly worked for their family. Helping families achieve outcomes like these—where people feel heard, children are protected, and futures are preserved—is what continues to motivate our work every day.
What made you decide to choose this field or industry?
I shifted my law practice from litigation to mediation in 2014, after my third son was born. Becoming a parent changed my perspective on family conflict and the real cost of going to court. I saw many families leave the courtroom feeling drained, out of money, and broken in ways that could have been prevented. Litigation often rewards conflict and benefits lawyers, but it can leave families in pieces. I realized I could no longer be part of a system that made things worse instead of better. Choosing mediation was my way of standing up for peace, dignity, and better results for families. This work lets me help my neighbors and friends by guiding families to resolve conflict in ways that protect children, save resources, and support long-term stability. Keeping the peace helps not just individual families, but also Poway and all of San Diego.
What is the most interesting part of your business?
The most rewarding part of our work is seeing the real, lasting impact it has on couples, children, and their futures. We help people reach agreements, but we also guide parents to co-parent in healthier ways, communicate better, and keep conflict low even after the legal process is over. Mediation often helps families save a lot of money compared to long court battles. This means they can keep more of their assets, give their children a stable environment, and invest in their future instead of spending on legal fees. It is very meaningful to see parents finish the process able to sit together at school events, graduations, and weddings. When done well, this work can truly change lives. The positive effects reach not just the couple, but also their children, extended families, and the wider community. Knowing that our skills help create healthier futures is what makes this work so powerful and rewarding.
What do you wish you knew starting out, or what would you have done differently?
I wish I would have moved into my role as the Chief PeaceKeeper sooner than I did. This is truly rewarding and inspiring work.
What are you most proud of?
We can make a real difference in the lives of children whose parents are divorcing. When we help parents talk openly and constructively about what their children need, we keep the children's well-being at the heart of every decision during divorce. This child-first mindset stands apart from traditional litigation, which can lose sight of what truly matters and let other concerns overshadow real solutions.
Tell us something we would not know about you.
I went to New York University on a tennis scholarship in 1997 after being drafted in the late rounds of major league baseball draft. I lasted less than a month but get to say that I was paid pennies to play professionally!
What keeps you inspired and motivated?
My wife Mary. She has so much genuine gratitude and compassion. She is the heart and energy leading our team of peacemakers.
When and why did you join the Poway Chamber of Commerce?
2018. To become an active member of the community I live in, shop in and support.
What would you tell someone who is considering joining the Poway Chamber?
Do it, just do it.
What has been your favorite part of being a member of the Poway Chamber of Commerce?
Getting to be friends with Mike Leland. He is such an awesome person, friend and champion of our business. I can't say enough good things about Mike!
